What We Do - Videoconferencing

Face-to-face without the travel.

Videoconferencing can save time and money, swapping one day's travel for one hour's talk. It can also support more flexible ways of working, particularly remote working and collaboration with distributed partners.

We provide video conference facilities in central Bristol that are available for hire to University of Bristol departments and staff. We no longer provide services for external organisations other than when in conference with University staff.

Personnel Services recommend the use of videoconferencing for staff recruitment, and will pay the costs incurred by University of Bristol departments. Videoconferencing can also be used for viva examinations under certain circumstances.

Some recent examples:

• Julie Selwyn of the The Hadley Centre for Adoption and Foster Care Studies at the University of Bristol, gave expert testimony for the Australian Government, at a high profile case in the Australian Supreme Court.
• Dr John Abbott of 21st Century Learning Initiative, was the keynote speaker at the 2003 Association of Independent Schools Annual Conference 2003 at the Commonwealth Bank, Sydney Australia. His total travel time was 40 minutes!
• Dr R J S Jones, Faculty of Medicine, works with multi-disciplinary medical professionals, using videoconferencing to bring patients and professionals together. Zoom cameras provide the tool for long-distance diagnosis, discussion of treatment and presentation of graphic materials.
